Two full days of free live music for fans of all genres will transform downtown Mountain View into a music lovers paradise during A La Carte & Art, May 16-17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Castro Street. Twelve top bands are scheduled to play a wide-ranging musical mix on stage and street.
The Refugees have made it their mission to recreate the music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, from the complex chord progressions to the subtle phrasing and vocal harmonies. You’ll be sure to hear your favorite Petty tunes, like Free Fallin’, American Girl, Refugee, and Into the Great Wide Open. If you close your eyes, you might even think that you’re at a Tom Petty concert. Get back to the A-B-Cs of '60s rock 'n' roll with Old School. Guitarist Ed Olsen says the five band members are united in one vision—having a blast re-creating the great, upbeat tunes of '60s pop rock. And boy, does it show! Playing such invigorating tunes as "This Diamond Ring," and "These Boots are Made for Walkin'," the band puts enthusiasm and energy into every chord, every vocal, and every mod move. Get ready to boogie with the high-energy sound of Soul Intention. They blend the classic with the current to create a hip new flavor of funk, rock and soul. The nine-piece band has a full horn section and loves to flaunt it, showcasing tunes from groups like Tower of Power and Earth, Wind and Fire. “We like to honor the great horn bands of the past,” says lead singer Scott Kolodzieski.

They deliver your favorite funk, rock and R&B tunes, all played with the highest level of musicianship, drawing inspiration from groups as diverse as Prince, Stevie Wonder, the Grateful Dead, and B.B. King. With more than 24 years of experience and a classic look and style to spare, The Garage Band can deliver for any occasion and musical taste. They dish out a good cross section of music, like classics from Joe Cocker, the Beatles and Steely Dan. It’s a guaranteed party when Livewire takes the stage. This popular Bay Area dance band brings a tight set, excellent music selection and showmanship that will get everyone out of their seat and onto the dance floor. Livewire’s outstanding vocalists, two male and two female, allow for lush harmonies and a wide music selection, ranging from 70’s classics like ABBA and the Bee Gees to modern groove from the Black Eyed Peas and Kelly Clarkson.
Enjoy some of the Bay Area’s top street musicians, like the original jazz and blues tunes from Emerson. His unique sound comes from exposure to both Caribbean and European music genres, as well as American soul music, producing what some have called “Moody Blues with heart and soul.” His rich voice and masterful keyboard playing is a real treat for music lovers. Kaweh brings his diverse and authentic music, which combines world, jazz, nuevo flamenco with a touch of Latin, Brazilian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern. Savor the romantic music of Dreamroad, with wind player Laura Bryant and keyboardist Max Gutierrez. This duo combines lush flutes, recorders, keyboards and hammered dulcimer into beautiful and spiritual melodies. Their original compositions hail from their diverse cultural heritage and performance experiences, with a rhythmic sensibility reminiscent of world-beat. Jose Cabezas of Ancient Winds brings to the festival his beautiful music of the Andes, from traditional Ecuadorian folk music to his own original compositions. Cabezas plays these haunting yet uplifting melodies on guitars and his own handcrafted flutes. Take a musical journey to old Italy with Heartstrings Music, featuring Al Fabrizio on mandolin and Hugo Wainzinger on guitar. The pair plays romantic, easy listening, Italian melodies including tarantellas, polkas and traditional ethnic heartfelt ballads. Bob Culbertson creates his music on the Chapman stick, a guitar-like stringed instrument designed to be tapped, not strummed or plucked. Culbertson has mastered the acoustic version of this instrument, displaying ferocious technique with the command of a virtuoso and capturing the rich warm sound of the instrument.
