Mission: Zero Waste
The Chamber of Commerce Mountain View is partnering once again with Recology Mountain View, the City of Mountain View and Nothing Wasted Consulting to promote and encourage Zero Waste at the Mountain View Art & Wine Festival, September 10-11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Castro Street.
“Every day we talk about ways to reduce, re-use, and recycle,” said Oscar Garcia, President/CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. “We’re working hard to make this a Zero Waste festival — it’s a top priority for us and something we diligently plan for and try to improve upon every year.”
The festival has taken steps to make it easier than ever for festivalgoers and vendors to conserve resources by recycling. Festival food vendors are required to use recyclable foodware. The festival will be serving beer, margaritas and mojitos in recyclable and bio-degradable plastic cups. Specially marked free-standing containers will be positioned throughout the festival route for recycling glass and plastic bottles, and aluminum cans.
Additionally, there will be large recycling containers for cardboard and mixed paper as well as glass, plastic and aluminum in strategic locations for event staff, vendors and sponsors. “We want to be absolutely certain we’re doing everything possible to maximize recycling and minimize trash,” said Garcia. The festival will recycle an estimated 5,000 glass and aluminum bottles.
Nothing Wasted Consulting has joined the festival team this year to help take the Zero Waste effort to a whole new level. Nothing Wasted Consulting works with clients to develop and implement sustainable waste management systems to minimize the environmental impact from special events.
The festival is also encouraging the use of public transportation, bicycles and car pools to minimize carbon emissions and reduce vehicular traffic. Downtown Mountain View is served by VTA Light Rail and Bus service as well as Caltrain. The transit center drops riders off at the festival “doorstep”. Secure bicycle valet parking will be offered by the Friends of Stevens Creek Trail at Castro and Church Streets.

Recology Mountain View is an employee-owned company providing curbside collection recycling and garbage service to residents of the City of Mountain View.
